The Liebster award

Liebster Award LogoThe Liebster Award is basically a set of eleven questions given to upcoming bloggers by their online colleagues. Each nominee then comes up with their own eleven questions and nominates some more bloggers, thus helping them build a readership.
Thank you, Svenja from Travel. Blog. Repeat. for nominating me!

Here are my answers to Svenja’s questions:

1. When did you decide to start blogging and why?

I had been thinking about that for some three years because I knew I had extensive travel experience to share. I actually got down to it two months ago when I found an excellent website building teacher and consultant Anna, who is patiently guiding me through all the steps of creating my site. I hope that one day I will be able to do it all by myself! It's like discovering a new world.

2. Do you have any favorite places you keep returning to?

I keep returning to London at least once a year. I have been there some 30-40 times. I just love to be there.

3. Have you ever drastically changed a trip, e.g. canceled your return flight and stayed, booked a flight leaving the very next day immediately after arrival, drove past your destination because you suddenly changed your mind, ...?

Maybe not so drastically, because I plan my trips quite carefully, still I love nature, and nature exploring trips are affected by weather. When I was in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, and it started to pour, I asked my hotel to cancel the last day of my stay and went by bus to Salzburg, Austria. It wasn't such bad luck, either, because Salzburg was beautiful. There was also a situation when my travel plans were changed without my agreement. At the end of November 2008 I was sitting in the Riga airport after the check-in, waiting to board my flight to Helsinki with a change to Bangkok. I was watching the news, and it said protesters were taking over the Suvarnabhumi Airport. I approached the flight attendants for information and after a while just bought a bottle of cognac and went back home. My trip to Thailand only happened about two years later. After that incident I always think twice before making nonrefundable hotel reservations.

4. Do you usually travel solo or with someone else?

A good travel mate is hard to find. I was lucky to have a few, still they had different priorities, meaning I usually travel solo.

5. Carry-on only or with checked luggage?

On real travel trips carry-on only, a small backpack more often than not.

6. What is your favorite kind of accommodation – hotel, hostel, bed & breakfast, ...?

I prefer value for money accommodation. As a mature traveler, I don't like to be disturbed at night, therefore I mostly choose hotels. Bed&brekfast works fine for me as well. For reservations of two days and longer I also consider renting apartments.

7. How do you stay fit while traveling?

A good question. Long distance hiking does not help me, unfortunately. I can easily take on a couple of kilos on a two week trip! I try to fight that after getting back home, usually successfully.

8. What do you enjoy besides traveling and blogging?

I love taking pictures, both when traveling and at home. I also take travel planning seriously because holiday time is my “hard currency”, and I don't want to waste it. Besides that, I like classical music and classical art.

9. What is your favorite book and why?

I don't really have a single all-time favorite. From the recent reads, I enjoyed “Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior” by Ori and Rom Brahman, “A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers” by Xiaolu Guio and “Iberia” by James A. Michener.

10. Cats or dogs?

I love cats but don't have any pets because of my lifestyle.

11. Is there anything else you would like to share with your readers?
