This is my second article outlining recommended travel destinations for each month of the year. A few years ago, I published an article featuring 12 travel ideas for every month of the year. While my suggestions may not appeal to beach lovers – since I recommend visiting beach destinations when the water is colder for swimming – I am an experiential traveller who prioritises exploration over swimming, even though I love to swim. Feel free to explore my travel recommendations for each month of the year based on my personal experiences in 2023 and 2024.
January. South Georgia and Antarctica
After learning about South Georgia Island and its remarkable penguin population, I decided to visit the island myself on a Penguin safari trip by Quark Expeditions. Located in the sub-Antarctic region, this remote island is only accessible by a three-day boat journey from Ushuaia. South Georgia is known for its abundant wildlife, including over seven million penguins, millions of breeding birds, and more than half of the world's southern elephant seals. The island is home to approximately 450,000 pairs of king penguins, 1.1 million pairs of yellow-crested macaroni penguins, and large populations of Gentoo and chinstrap penguins. And, of course, a visit to Antarctica was an opportunity I could not pass up.
Why January?
January is the summer season in Antarctica and South Georgia, during which penguin chicks can be observed. It is also the peak time for tourists to visit Antarctica, so expect higher prices during this period. You may find my tips for planning an Antarctica trip helpful.
February. Mexico
Mexico is a vast country packed with so many attractions that it is nearly impossible to see them all in just one trip. I visited Mexico City, Merida, Oaxaca, Puebla, and other destinations during my two-week itinerary. Mexico City and the ancient Mayan ruins, including Chichen Itza, stood out as highlights of my journey. Swimming in cenotes, natural sinkholes connected to the underground river system of the Yucatan Peninsula, was also a memorable experience.
Why February?
In February, Mexico experiences pleasant weather, making it an ideal time to visit. As winter turns to spring, areas like Mexico City may have minimal rainfall and mild temperatures, creating perfect conditions for sightseeing.
March. Algarve, Portugal
March may not be the typical choice to visit the Algarve. Still, for those who prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, it can be the perfect time to explore the natural beauty of the Algarve coast and wander through the region’s historic towns. During my visit, I particularly enjoyed discovering the towns of Silves and Lagos, as well as exploring remote coastal areas accessible only by boat, such as Ponta da Piedade. Be sure to visit Praia da Falesia beach, nestled beneath towering red and ochre cliffs that reach heights of up to 40 metres. Its breathtaking natural beauty has been likened to the Grand Canyon.
Why March?
March in the Algarve typically sees temperatures ranging from 12°C to 19°C, providing a fantastic opportunity to explore the region without the scorching heat and crowds. For cooler evenings and nights, bring a light jacket or sweater.
April. Munich and Bavaria
Munich is well-known for its diverse art scene, impressive architecture, and famous beer culture, making it a popular destination for tourists in Germany. In addition to its many attractions, the city serves as a convenient hub for exploring the surrounding area, including nearby lakes, Augsburg, Freising and Schleissheim Palace. The region is easily accessible thanks to Munich's efficient transportation network, which includes local S-Bahn and regional train services. These options are affordable and reliable, offering fast access to a variety of nearby sights and activities during different day trips.
Why April?
April is a good time for hiking and cycling in Bavaria, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C. Late April is recommended as it falls outside the peak season and the weather is usually pleasant, though cooler days are still possible.
May. Montenegro
Montenegro is renowned for its diverse landscape, which includes mountains, historic villages, and picturesque beaches along the Adriatic coast. The Bay of Kotor is home to coastal churches and fortified towns such as Herceg Novi, Budva, and Kotor. Durmitor National Park features glacial lakes, the Tara River Canyon, and limestone peaks. The country's history is evident in its Venetian walls, Roman mosaics, Illyrian churches, Catholic and Orthodox monasteries, mosque minarets, and socialist-style buildings that dot its rugged terrain. Montenegro boasts a rich and varied cultural heritage shaped by centuries of civilisation.
Why May?
Montenegro, a small country, tends to become very crowded during summer. May is considered shoulder season, marked by fewer tourists and the chance to swim in the sea. The weather is warm but not excessively hot, with a lower chance of rain compared to earlier months.
June. Dolomites, Italy
The Dolomites, located in the northern Italian Alps, are a mountain range with 18 peaks over 3,000 metres and an area of 141,903 hectares. Known for their stunning mountain landscapes, which feature vertical walls, sheer cliffs, and numerous narrow valleys, they are a must-see for climbers and hikers alike. Designated as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2009, this picturesque region offers visitors a variety of high-altitude tours, long walks, and leisurely strolls. Before setting off on your adventure, pack water, some food and wear appropriate footwear.
Why June?
The summer months of June, July, and August are the peak season for alpine hiking in the Dolomites, attracting the highest number of visitors. June tends to be less crowded than July and August. Please note that the weather in the Dolomites is significantly cooler than at lower elevations in northern Italy. In early summer, particularly in June, some hiking trails may still be covered in snow and certain ski lifts may still be closed.
July. Kuldiga, Latvia
Kuldiga, a town with a rich history dating back to 1242, experienced significant economic growth in the 17th century, becoming a prominent centre for trade, governance, and culture within the Duchy of Courland. The town's blend of historic architecture and natural surroundings creates a unique and harmonious atmosphere unparalleled in Latvia and beyond. In September 2023, the old town of Kuldiga and its iconic red-brick bridge over the Venta River were recognised and added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Additionally, Kuldiga is renowned for being home to the widest waterfall in Europe. For more travel suggestions, feel free to explore my other Latvia articles.
Why July?
July is the month with the most favourable weather in Latvia, though it comes with higher hotel prices and increased tourist traffic at attractions.
August. Bregenz Opera Festival, Austria
Bregenz, also known as The City by the Lake, is the capital of Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost region. The city boasts a history that spans thousands of years and is home to Austria's main harbour and the renowned Bregenz Festival. During my two visits, I had the opportunity to attend two opera performances at the festival: Madame Butterfly and The Marksman or The Freeshooter. The festival is a must-see for opera lovers, offering unforgettable performances on a unique lakeside stage known as the Seebuhne, with the audience seated in grandstands by the water. The festival's main opera production features a massive floating stage with impressive sets.
Why August?
Since 1946, the Bregenz Festival has been held every year on the shores of Lake Constance, attracting opera lovers during the summer months of July and August.
September. Namibia
Namibia boasts a variety of landscapes and attractions, including vast blue skies, expansive dunes, a rugged coastline, and abundant wildlife reserves. With its unique mix of wildlife, stunning scenery, and cultural diversity, Namibia is a country worth exploring. From towering dunes to spectacular sunsets, the natural beauty of Namibia is truly remarkable. As one of the largest countries in Africa and the 34th largest in the world, Namibia has a low population density of just 3.2 inhabitants per square kilometre. Known for its safety, political stability, and good governance since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia is considered one of the safest countries in Africa. Be sure you add a safari in Etosha National Park to your itinerary.
Why September?
September marks the dry season in the country, with moderate daytime temperatures and clear, sunny weather, making it perfect for extended safari outings. Wildlife sightings are optimal across all parks during this time, with Etosha National Park standing out in particular. Nighttime and early morning temperatures can be chilly, so remember to pack warm clothing for morning game drives. You may find my packing suggestions helpful.
October. Alsace, France
Nestled in the eastern part of France, Alsace borders Germany to the east and the Lorraine region to the west. It is the smallest region in France known for its picturesque setting between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River. This region is popular among tourists for its friendly locals, quaint villages, delicious cuisine, and beautiful scenery. Alsace is home to several charming towns such as Colmar, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Bergheim, and Kaysersberg. These towns and many others on the Alsace Wine Route resemble settings straight out of a fairy tale.
Why October?
This region of France is accessible year-round, but for a more peaceful experience, it is best to visit during the shoulder seasons of late April to early May or late September to early October.
November. Alicante province, Spain
Situated in the southeast of Spain, within the Community of Valencia, Alicante province is renowned for its Costa Blanca tourism brand and features a Mediterranean landscape with beaches and mountains. Although Alicante is popular as a summer destination, I suggest considering a winter visit to enjoy the beauty of this Mediterranean city. Do not miss the opportunity to explore Calpe, Novelda, and Elche, which is famous for its Palmeral (Palm Grove), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, Alicante is famous for its rice dishes, with the traditional paella being a local speciality.
Why November?
As someone from the relatively cooler country of Latvia, Alicante provides a welcome change from the dreary November weather back home. With about six hours of sunshine a day, the city offers plenty of opportunities to explore its attractions. The average temperature is a comfortable 16°C, reaching highs of 20°C.
December. Egypt
Located in the northeastern part of Africa, Egypt is renowned for its rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking landscapes. This time of year is ideal for visiting famous sites like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, and the Abu Simbel temples. History lovers may be particularly drawn to Egypt by the highly anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum. The cooler weather provides the perfect conditions for extended outdoor adventures without the discomfort of excessive heat. Additionally, a cruise along the Nile River from Aswan to Luxor is especially enjoyable in the winter, as the mild temperatures ensure a comfortable experience both on the boat and during onshore excursions.
Why December?
December is a popular time for travel due to the pleasant weather. Daytime temperatures are warm with plenty of sunshine, while evenings are refreshingly cool.
